- User's Information
- For FileVan 5
- Rev October 1, 2003
-
- ABOUT FileVan 5:
- FileVan will transfer files on PCs running any combination of Windows
- 95, 98, ME, XP, 2000 and NT. It was created with Microsoft's Visual Basic
- Windows programming language. If you know how to drag/drop, you won't need
- any further instructions to transfer files and folders. Much additional
- capability is in the menus which may be accessed from the menu bar or by
- right-mouse clicking over the 4 lists.
-
- DIFFERENCE FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS:
- The primary difference from FileVan 4 is that this version has
- drag/drop functionality. Also linking is faster and browsing is much more
- responsive. Our DOS product (FileVan For DOS) runs on DOS and Windows 3.x.
- Furthermore, FileVan 5 can 'talk' to our DOS program (scheduled by the
- end of 2003).
-
- PROGRAM DIRECTORY:
- These are some of the files installed on your hard drive:
- FileVan.Exe Main program
- UserInfo.Txt This file
- FV5Unins.Exe Removes the entire installation.
- License.Txt End User License Agreement.
- Order.Exe On-screen order form.
- TextXXX.Ini Translation Files
- Other .DLL .OCX .BMP .WAV, .ICO and .INI files are support files for
- the main program.
-
- INSTALLING THE PROGRAM FILES ON ANOTHER PC:
- To transfer files between PCs, FileVan needs to be running on both. If
- you have the trial version, run SetupF5T.Exe on both PCs. If you have
- the registered version, run SetupF5R.Exe on both PCs. Setup is
- automatic and takes about half a minute.
-
- INSTALLING THE HARDWARE:
- Connect the Laplink Parallel Port Cable from any printer port on one
- PC to any printer port on another PC.
-
- TO RUN:
- Select the FileVan item from "Programs" on your Start menu. The program
- will automatically find which printer port is connected to the cable.
-
- NOTES:
- 1) File Transfer Utilities (this and any other brand) will transfer all
- files including those critical to system operation. If transferring
- system-critical files to another PC, that PC may hang during the trans-
- fer as its own system-critical files are overwritten. If you are not
- able to reboot, you may need to reinstall Windows. If you need to
- temporarily transfer such files to another PC, such as when upgrading
- your hard drive, be sure to specify destination directories that will
- not cause overwriting of its system-critical files. Such files are
- usually found in the root directory, Windows directory, the
- Windows\System directory and the DOS directory, but may be found in
- many other places as well. The power you have with FileVan to transfer
- files is also the power to do serious temporary damage to your
- operating system.
-
- 2) File Transfer Utilities are generally intended to transfer work files.
- If you transfer applications (examples are MicroSoft WORD, MS-DOS, WORD
- PERFECT, WINDOWS, VISUAL BASIC...), the destination PC's operating
- system does not know the source PC's registry settings and other info
- that may be buried in system initilization files, causing you to
- laboriously create the critical information that the application needs.
- If you have the original installation disks or CD-ROM, it is always
- faster and better to use them instead.
-
- 3) A characteristic of transferring a large number of small files is that
- the destination PC may appear to bog down and write files very slowly,
- especially if the disk is more than half full. This is because the
- location of the file and the location of the FAT (file allocation
- table used for keeping track of file locations) is physically distant.
- Excessive time may be used as the disk head moves back and forth for
- each small file. Most programs that handle files have the same
- difficulty. What some users do is to ZIP such files together before
- transfer.
-
- 4) FileVan makes an internal note of each file as it begins to be received.
- Should the sending PC be interrupted by a power failure before the
- transfer is complete, FileVan will remove the beginning file remnant.
- If the receiving PC is interrupted, file remnants (also called "lost
- clusters") may be present. Use Window's Scandisk to remove lost clusters.
-
- 5) Always be aware of the possibility that some of the files you are
- transferring may be virus-infected. FileVan has no way of knowing whether
- a virus is present. A file with a virus will be transferred just like any
- other file. Use anti-virus software frequently to test your hard drives
- and floppy drives.
-
- 6) For the program to be shown in a specific language, Control Panel's
- Regional Settings must be set to that language. Or you can switch to a
- different language from the 'File' menu. Select "Language Support".
